When sweat starts pouring on the foreheads of the musicians, blood is
dropping from their fingers onto their guitars and their bodies cannot stop
to move, then you get to imagine how Rock n Roll was discovered.
When flippant guitar-riffs meet an earthy bass, when the drum is
dynamically rolling and the vocals sound as if there was no tomorrow,
some get reminded of the golden age of Rock n Roll. However, if the
musicians are in their best twenties, performing here and now, the public
? old and young ? gets blown away.
The story begins in the late 90s in a suburb of Bienne. Inspired by bands
like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and AC/DC, it soon becomes clear
where Carnation want to take their music to. After the release of their
debut album ?Good Morning Evening? in 2003, the band?s first two singles
get airplay on most of the national Radio and TV stations. Furthermore,
the daily papers focus on the band, offering them extra coverage and
front-pages. After playing many gigs all through the country and over the
borders, Carnation decide to take it one step further?
In March 2005 the 4 lads make their way to Sweden to record the follow-up.
Their luggage: New songs, instruments, confidence and, most importantly,
their souls. Way up north, surrounded by green forests and endless fields, a new
album gets born: ?Waxy?s Little Sister?. To get the right energy, the two
producers Fredrik Kronbäck and Martin Sventorp, decide to do the
recording of Carnation live and uncut. No studio effects and scarcely no
overdubs are being used during the sessions. It is the only way that the
raw, direct and spontaneous sound from the band is to become concrete.
For Carnation, recording live means to create those magic moments,
which give goose bumps and can tell the feelings Carnation wants you to
feel.
Within two weeks, 14 songs influenced by the adventure, the country and
mostly by the band?s ambition, get recorded by Carnation. Musically, the
band is on a wide road; sometimes, King Rock n Roll stops for some quiet
tunes, just to come back a second later. It seems that there is a battle
going on between the good and the bad, between loud and silent, and just
when you think you get behind the band?s recipe, a new, refreshing
ingredient is mixed in. References to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or
even to movies like Scarface and The Godfather are recognizable, but still
?Waxy?s Little Sister? is a unique album. It definitely is a document of
Rock n Roll in 2005.
Carnation work hard for their music, and they want the world to know.
4 lads that make music sound as easy as can be. Raffael (vocals, guitar),
Chris (guitar, vocals), Andy (bass, vocals) and Kevin (drums) do not care
about technical playing, music is supposed to be simple but touching.
The riffs and beats are as straight as possible, and so are their lyrics. The
beauty of their songs is in the change of harmony and energy, of cliché
and surprise. ?Waxy?s Little Sister? is on one hand an homage to the good
old days, on the other hand it is a call to the music-scene to get the ?Roll?
back into rock music.
All or nothing is a rule; on- and offstage. Many are surprised how
concentrated Carnation go for their goals. Every success is only regarded
to be one step closer to their aim, on every question there is an answer.
Carnation are on their way, step after step, unimpressed by gain and loss.
Because in the end, one thing is for sure: They gave their souls to
Rock n Roll
